USWNT improves to 18-0-3 with comeback victory

ATLANTA -- The U.S. Women's National Team improved its record to 18-0-3 this year with a 3-1 victory over The Netherlands before a 15,652 crowd at the Georgia Dome Sunday night.

The Netherlands scored in the second minute on a counter finished by Shanice van de Sanden. U.S. captain Carli Lloyd leveled in the 35th minute with an assist from Tobin Heath, her 94th career goal in her 230th international appearance.

An own goal from Dutch captain Mandy van den Berg five minutes into the second half gave the U.S. a 2-1 lead before Allie Long registered her third career goal on a close-range header in the 77th minute.

The Dutch became only the fourth team to score against the U.S. this year as van den Berg sent a long ball for van de Sanden, who shot past a diving Alyssa Naeher inside the far post.

The U.S. tied the score as right back Whitney Engen sent a left-foot cross to Heath, who went toward the end line before slotting a pass for a charging Lloyd to finish inside the near post from close range.

In the 49th minute, U.S. forward Morgan Brian’s shot off an Ali Krieger pass hit the post and deflected off Sari van Veenendaal, who then stopped Lloyd’s point-blank attempt.

The U.S. took the lead in the 50th minute. Christen Press sent a low cross into the goal area, van den Berg redirecting into the net in a battle with Heath.

Substitute Megan Rapinoe set up the final goal, crossing from the right to Lloyd at the far post, Lloyd heading on, Long then heading past van Veenendaal in the goal area.

Naeher made five saves, including an 81st-minute stop as van de Sanden broke in alone, in her third start of the year.
