San Antonio FC signs Costa Rican forward

SAN ANTONIO -- San Antonio FC has signed Costa Rican international Cesar Elizondo, the team announced Monday.

“We are excited to add Cesar to the roster,” SAFC coach Darren Powell said. “It is nice to add an attacking player to an area where we have had a few injuries lately. I am excited to start working with him and welcome him back to San Antonio.”

Elizondo, 28, played for the San Antonio Scorpions in 2014 and ’15, scoring eight goals and helping lead the team to a 2014 NASL Championship at Toyota Field.

“I’m very excited to return to a city that I love like San Antonio, and join such an exciting club in San Antonio FC,” Elizondo said. “The players, coaching staff and front office are all first class, and I can’t wait to play in front of San Antonio fans and bring titles to Toyota Field.”

Elizondo played for CD Saprissa, making 28 appearances from 2008-13, before moving the Carolina RailHawks in the NASL in 2013. Elizondo was traded to the Scorpions in the middle of the 2014 season. Elizondo scored 10 goals and recorded eight assists in 68 NASL games. Elizondo scored four goals in 18 appearances for Pérez Zeledón in Costa Rica last season.

Elizondo has made 10 appearances for the Costa Rican national team, in Copa America, Copa Centroamericana and friendlies. Elizondo made four appearances in CONCACAF Champions League play with Saprissa.
