NPSL team readies for opener

FORT WORTH --The City of Fort Worth officially honored the Fort Worth Vaqueros on Tuesday, when the City Council proclaimed in "Fort Worth Vaqueros Day".

“This is a great honor for our young organization to be recognized by the civic leaders of Fort Worth,” Vaqueros owner Michael Hitchcock said. “We are thrilled by the reception we have received so far from the community and this honor validates our community-first approach to the creation of Fort Worth’s new soccer club.”

The Council recognition was the beginning of Vaqueros week, which culminates with the team's second home game on Sunday following the Friday opener.

On Thursday, the team has a Near South Side Pub Crawl which begins at 5 p.m. CST at the Hilton a Garden Inn – Fort Worth Medical Center until 6:30 p.m. From there the crawl will journey onward to The Chat Room, The Usual, Zio Carlo Magnolia Brew Pub, Bearded Lady and Republic Street Bar. Participants, fans and observers can track the progress through Vaqueros social media.

On Friday, the Vaqueros begin play at 7:30 pm CST May 9 at LaGrave Field against the defending South Central Conference Champion Tulsa Athletics. Corporate Partner Dr Pepper Snapple Group will hand out commemorative Vaqueros team posters to the first 2,500 fans (kids 5 and under get in free). A slew of city leaders and community VIPs are already lined up to attend including city councilman Sal Espino, Miss Fort Worth Destiny Velez and Miss North Texas Outstanding Teen, Meagan Hullett.

North Side High School’s national award-winning Mariachi group will play the national anthem alongside a special color guard presentation from the Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base.

The Fort Worth sky and Trinity River area will light up after the match with post game fireworks.

On Sunday, opening weekend will close with a special Sunday Mother's Day match at 5:30 p.m. CST May 11 at LaGrave Field. Moms get into the game free. Fort Worth will put local pride on the line as the visitors from North Dallas, the Liverpool Warriors head over to Cowtown. The game dubbed “Fort Worth Soccer Night” will feature a parade of youth soccer teams from the Fort Worth and surrounding Youth Soccer Associations. TVaqueros partner Hispano Exito, will be collecting backpacks or gently used soccer gear to benefit area youth. The Vaqueros will give a free ticket to the May 29th game for every item donated to the Pass Back promotion. Young fans will receive a FIFA Brazil 2014 World Cup Panini sticker book.
