August 5, 2010 DO NOT MISS THIS ONE
Inter Milan exhibition much more than game
Do not let tonight’s friendly exhibition between FC Dallas and Inter Milan pass by. An opportunity like this may not come this way again, or it might. But if Dallas soccer fans do not show they are ready for such elite clubs to rub shoulders with the local guys (I.E.: put your fannies in the PHP seats) it might be a cold day in August before the next European Super Team gets the invite, along with a six-figure -fee from local owner/operator Hunt Sports Group (Hunt Sports Group).
June 11, 2010 TALKING WORLD CUP OPENERS
Today was good; 1990 was incredible
It was easy today, getting up, walking down the hall to my office and clicking on the television. Next it was making a big mug of cappuccino and waking my nearly 7-year-old grandson Maddox to watch the 2010 World Cup opener to start a tradition for a young man. He already loves the sport and loves to play the beautiful game. But 20 years ago it was a completely different story for this reporter as I piled out of a cramped rental car in Milan, Italy and started a trek to a stadium that I couldn’t really see in the distance.
May 5, 2010 PLAYING BEST SOCCER NOT ENOUGH
Hyndman says goals, wins will come
FC Dallas has about a season’s worth of highlights in just five games, if you don’t count scoring goals. Playing some of the league’s best soccer loses some of its luster if the goals don’t go along with it. Just ask some of the FCD players, or head coach Schellas Hyndman, or the fans.
April 13, 2010 SOCCER MEMORIES STILL LINGER
After Texas Stadium implosion
By now, virtually anyone in North Texas has seen the clips of the Texas Stadium implosion. Or, like I did, get up early Sunday morning to watch it happen live. Obviously, Texas Stadium was known for the Dallas Cowboys, concerts, some college games and high school football. And I was there for all of that, but I will always recall Texas Stadium for its many soccer memories and events.
January 15, 2010 FAR BEYOND MERE SOCCER
U.S. Women started winning legacy in Haiti
Haiti has never left my heart, even 18 years after spending two weeks there with the U.S. Women’s National Team in the CONCACAF qualifying tournament for the first Women’s World Cup held in China late in 1991. The country and its needs were overwhelming, even during that festive event. And now, in the wake of the devastating and deadly earthquake this week, its pain is ripping a big hole in my heart.
November 22, 2009 THE WAY I SEE IT
Jason Kreis owes Dallas--Big Time
The way I see it, coach Jason Kreis and Real Salt Lake owes Dallas an awful lot—like nearly everything. If you are reading this column, you also probably watched RSL knock off the favored Los Angeles Galaxy 2-1 via a PK shootout after a 1-1 tie through two overtimes, tonight at Seattle. They were the Cinderella team and the first MLS team to win the championship that didn’t even have a winning record on the season, finishing the year 11-12-7.
September 30, 2009 CUNNINGHAM: HE IS THE MAN
Still playing for the whole kit and kaboodle
In a season that is all except technically over for FC Dallas, a player with big time stats and wearisome luggage that he takes with him wherever he plays, is making this team suddenly very interesting to watch. The player is Jeff Cunningham, currently tied for the league golden boot award for most goals, at 15 on the season, with Colorado’s Conor Casey.
September 3, 2009 MOOR SHOCKED, BUT NOT DOWN
Hyndman puts faith in Ihemelu
The shock is basically over. However, in the realm of professional sports, the trade of any athlete, even such a hometown hero and positive locker room influence as Drew Moor, should come as no surprise.
June 12, 2009 DON'T FORGET TRIBUTE MATCH
Game illumines Dallas soccer legacy
Living legacies of Dallas Soccer will be on the pitch Saturday when FC Dallas presents its inaugural Dallas Soccer Tribute Match at Pizza Hut Park at 5:15 p.m., prior to the MLS game between FCD and the Houston Dynamo.
June 1, 2009 FINALLY, TEAM PULLS TOGETHER
Players, Schellas 'Seeing the Light'
Finally, the pieces are beginning to fit for Schellas Hyndman and FC Dallas—at least for a day. No, I take it back; the pieces have been grinding together at least for the last five halves of soccer, starting with the second half against the Seattle Sounders May 16.
February 24, 2009 FCD CONNECTING DOTS
Dallas has the pieces; Hyndman must mold
Schellas Hyndman, who had been feeling pretty good about FC Dallas’ spring this year, was almost ready to break out in song Tuesday afternoon after team management dug down and came to an agreement with the midfield attacker the FCD coach has been lobbying for.
February 13, 2009 RICHETTI READY FOR ARMBAND
His leadership should stabilize FC Dallas
Anyone who watched FC Dallas play in 2008 is not surprised that head coach Schellas Hyndman named veteran defensive midfielder Pablo Richetti as captain for this season.
November 19, 2008 FCD FANS CAN FIND HOPE IN CUP
League parity makes worst to first possible
If discouraged FC Dallas fans needed some “I Believe” faith when looking to next season, it will be all over the MLS Cup this year, an unlikely pairing between the New York Red Bulls and the Columbus Crew, FCD’s sister franchise under the Hunt Sports Group umbrella.
November 4, 2008 TIME FOR HUNT TO STEP UP
HSG president has clout if he decides to use it
To the mild-mannered Clark Hunt, it is time to step up and be the “owner” or “owner-operator” or whatever you want to call yourself, that you can be.
October 16, 2008 COOPER PASSES ON MNT CHANCE
Crucial MLS game trumps USA for FCD striker
There just hasn’t been anything to fault about the way Kenny Cooper Jr. has conducted his soccer career since returning home to Dallas after two-plus seasons at Manchester United. But some will be pointing fingers at the 23-year-old striker because he made a decision to stay home this week instead of answering his country’s call for Wednesday’s World Cup Qualifying Game at Trinidad and Tobago.
