PROKOF PAIR CARRIES TCU
Horned Frogs atop Big 12 after shutting out Oklahoma State
Michelle Prokof scored two goals and TCU's defense shut down visiting Oklahoma State in a 3-0 Big 12 Conference triumph.
Faith Carter also tallied for the Horned Frogs (8-4-0 overall, 2-0-0 Big 12), which sits alone atop the conference standings after the first weekend of play.
It was Prokof's third multigoal game this season and left her with 21 career collegiate goals.
“Michelle's an integral part of what we are trying to do,” TCU coach Eric Bell said on his school's athletics website. “She's in a really good spot. The work that she's doing when nobody else is watching is paying off. That's a testament that hard work pays off.”
Prokof converted a second-minute penalty kick, then finished a deflected cross from Emma Heckendorn 11 minutes into the second half to double the advantage.
Carter scored from an Eryn Spencer through ball in the 70th minute.
The Cowgirls (5-6-0, 0-2-0) were limited to three shots on goal and came closest to scoring when Madison Mercado hit the crossbar in the first half.
“We're really, really disappointed in losing two games this week,” OSU coach Colin Carmichael said on his school's athletics website. “You look at the scoreboard and it says 3-0, and it's disappointing, but it was a strange game. We did some good things, but we weren't good enough to win. When you give up, from our standpoint, somewhat easy goals and you don't capitalize on your opportunities, you're not winning any games in the Big 12.”
TCU plays at fifth-ranked West Virginia on Friday, when the Cowgirls are home against No. 15 Texas Tech.
