PLAYER OF THE WEEK
SMU's Michael Nelson
SMU's Michael Nelson is the Dallas Soccer News College Player of the Week after keeping the Mustangs in their Sweet 16 clash against dominant Akron before succumbing, 2-1, in the NCAA Division I men's tournament.
Nelson made nine saves as No. 11 SMU (15-2-4), overrun most of the afternoon, stayed in the game until the final whistle sent No. 5 Akron (17-3-2) to next week's quarterfinals.
The sophomore goalkeeper from Katy, Texas (Seven Lakes HS), who developed with Albion Hurricanes FC, has been the Mustangs' goalkeeper for two years after redshirting during his first season in Dallas. He posted a 0.99 goals-against average with nine shutouts this season and has a 0.98 GAA, 78.4 save percentage and 14 shutouts in two years with the Mustangs.
Nelson came up with nine saves as the Zips took a school-record 40 shots, 11 of them on frame, and NCAA tournament-record 19 corner kicks. He kept Akron scoreless in the second half, when the home side took 23 shots and 10 corners.
Nelson is the third SMU player honored this season. Idi Camara won the award in late August and Stanton Garcia in early November.
