PLAYER OF THE WEEK
SMU's Idi Camara
SMU's Idi Camara is the Dallas Soccer News College Player of the Week after scoring three goals as the 12th-ranked Mustangs moved onto the verge of the American Athletic Conference regular-season championship with a victory over Tulsa and a draw at No. 13 South Florida.
Camara scored the second and third goals Wednesday night in a 3-2 triumph over Tulsa and tallied the second in a 2-2 tie with USF, a result that left SMU (11-2-3 overall, 6-0-1 AAC) two points ahead of the Bulls with one conference game remaining.
The senior forward from Denver, who played the Colorado Rapids' academy, has four goals this year after scoring seven as a sophomore, when he was an All-AAC and All-Central Region selection for the Mustangs. He played as a freshman and sophomore at Midwestern State, scoring six goals with five assists.
Camara, who was born in Mali and moved to the U.S. in 2006, finished to the lower left from a Mauro Cichero feed in the 35th minute to give SMU a 2-0 lead on Wednesday, then scored after Brenden Lee intercepted a pass from Tulsa's goalkeeper in the 47th. He provided the Mustangs a 2-0 lead at USF, heading into the top corner a Kevin Meinecke cross.
Camara also was selected the AAC's Offensive Player of the Week.
