Cichero lifts 9-man Mustangs past Cincinnati

Mauro Cichero struck in the 17th minute of overtime Saturday, and nine-man SMU pulled out a 1-0 triumph at Cincinnati to grab sole possession of the American Athletic Conference lead.

Cichero headed home a long Jared Rice throw-in with 3:08 to go as the 21st-ranked Mustangs (10-2-2 overall, 5-0-0 AAC) opened a two-point lead on No. 12 South Florida, which played Memphis to a 0-0 draw Friday.

SMU was down to nine men after Emil Cuello and Kevin Meinecke were red-carded 11 seconds apart a little less than four minutes before Cichero scored his team-best ninth goal of the year.

The Mustangs held a 21-14 shot advantage over the Bearcats (7-6-2, 1-2-2) and put nine shots on frame. Goalkeeper Michael Nelson made six saves for his sixth shutout this season.

SMU is home Wednesday against Tulsa.
