Central Florida edges Mustangs women

SMU answered Central Florida's late goal, then conceded in overtime to drop a 2-1 home decision Thursday in American Athletic Conference women's soccer.

Carol Rodrigues tallied in the 96th minute, her 10th goal of the season, to lift the Knights (9-5-1 overall, 4-3-0 AAC) into third place, four points behind No. 20 South Florida and three in back of No. 15 Connecticut.

Defender Haley Thompson scored her first collegiate goal for SMU (5-7-3, 2-3-1), which has lost two of its last three conference matches.

UCF had more of the play and built advantages in shots (15-10), shots on goal (9-3) and corner kicks (9-5), but it couldn't hit the net until the 70th minute, via Kayla Adamek.

Thompson curled in a corner kick in the 78th minute to tie the score, and the Mustangs just missed going ahead when Clare Oates headed a corner off the post two minutes later.

Rodrigues scored from Adamek's assist.

SMU is home Sunday against South Florida.
