BECKIE'S BRILLIANCE PAYS OFF
No. 21 Texas Tech claim 'must-win' clash with Kansas
Janine Beckie scored her 53rd career collegiate goal and No. 21 Texas Tech pulled out a 1-0 Big 12 Conference victory over visiting Kansas to halt a three-game winless streak.
Beckie tallied following a breakaway run in the 56th minute as the Red Raiders (9-3-5 overall, 2-2-3 Big 12) climbed into a tie for fourth in the conference, one point behind third-place Baylor.
Kansas had a statistical edge, with advantages in shots (22-14), shots on goal (8-6) and corner kicks (8-4).
Tech coach Tom Stone called the game “an absolute must-win,” and Beckie, the program's all-time goals leader, made sure of that with her 10th tally of the campaign.
“We went in at the half saying that we needed to change the formation to try to shake the game up,” Stone said on his school's athletics website. “And in the process of shaking the game up, we wrestled the game back from them.
“The capper was just honestly a world-class goal from Janine. She was on the run, right to left, hits it right footed with the laces, and it tucks in the back bar. I think we will be seeing that for many more years to come.”
The Red Raiders close their regular-season campaign next Friday at Iowa State.
