ADAMS LIFTS TEXAS TO 1ST
Longhorns edge Iowa State, share Big 12 lead with West Virginia
Texas climbed into a share of the Big 12 Conference lead Friday night as freshman Alexa Adams netted a pair of goals, including the 80th-minute winner, in a 2-1 triumph over visiting Iowa State.
Adams provided a 60th-minute lead for the Longhorns (5-3-4 overall, 2-1-1 Big 12), but Koree Willer pulled ISU (5-9-0, 0-5-0) even in the 67th minute.
Texas leapfrogged Baylor and TCU to pull even with No. 4 West Virginia atop the Big 12 standings, one point above the Bears, Horned Frogs and Kansas. West Virginia was held to a scoreless draw by Oklahoma.
“[Adams has] been creating opportunities for herself all season,” Texas coach Angela Kelly said on her school's athletics website. “That's what forwards are supposed to do: put the ball in the back of the net. I was really pleased for her and just excited the team could celebrate two great goals.”
The Longhorns built huge leads in shots (23-13) and corner kicks (12-3) and put seven shots on frame to just three by the Cyclones.
Adams broke the scoreless draw 15 minutes into the second half, putting away the rebound after fellow Southern Californian Mikayla Flores struck the crossbar, and Texas nearly added another a few minutes later, when Kayra Dollas' header was cleared off the goal line.
ISU equalized from the penalty spot, with Willer firing to the upper-left corner after she was taken down by Texas goalkeeper Abby Smith in a one-on-one situation.
Adams scored the winner with a little less than 11 minutes to play, finishing from 24 yards after Kelsey Shimmick headed onto her path from a long goal kick by Smith.
The Longhorns play Sunday at TCU.
